Year 6

Maths Day

27/2/2025

On Wednesday this week, we had our whole school Maths Day: an entire day dedicated to Maths!

In Year 6, we started the day off by completing some number pyramids. We then thought about how Maths is used in the real world and watched some videos of its use in different jobs and professions, including a restaurant, a vet surgery and a recycling centre. This led onto our big project of the day: designing a zoo. In pairs or small groups, Year 6 had to use budgeting skills as well as their knowledge of area to plan out their own zoo. They needed to add, subtract, multiply and divide to figure out how many buildings they could have, how many animals they could purchase and how much they needed to spend each month on animal feed. They completed an inventory of the total number of animals living in their zoo and then each group shared their zoo with the whole class. There were some fantastic designs and some brilliant Maths skills being used! Later in the day, we looked at tessellating shapes and how they can be used to create 3D images, having a go at some ourselves. To finish off Maths day, we had our parent workshop in class, where is was lovely that some of you were able to join us and experience a little taster of Year 6 Maths! The focus was bar models and how these can be used to support our thinking in Mathematical word problems. Finally, a little bit of fun with a Maths quiz and the day was complete!

Ice!

10/2/2025

In science today, the children conducted an investigation into the best way to slow down an ice cube from melting. They thought about their learning about thermal conductors and insulators and put this to the test. It turns out, a well-wrapped up ice cube will melt more slowly!
