We've had a busy couple of weeks since I last wrote a blog post! Year 6 have been fab and are now settled in and being accustomed to all of our classroom routines. Last Thursday, we were lucky enough to be able to participate in the Whiddon Autumn Festival - a celebration of music with lots of events held throughout Autumn. We learnt three songs: 'I like the flowers'; 'Wild mountain thyme' and a newly-composed piece by Sun Keting. Four other schools were involved and together we made up a large children's choir. The singing sounded fantastic and there was some brilliant enthusiasm and dedication on show! Another lovely surprise was our birthday girl getting to conduct the choir singing 'Happy Birthday'! Back in school, we've delved into our new topics and subjects. In History, we've been learning about living and working conditions during the Industrial Revolution. This week, we considered whether we'd rather work in a mine or a factory. In French, we're revising greeting and introductions. In Art, we've been studying the work of Sandra Silberzweig, a contemporary Canadian artist. We've had a go at portraits in this style, and throughout the rest of this half term we will be experimenting with different mediums to create similar portraits. Our theme in PSHE this half term is friendships and this week, we discussed different solutions to numerous friendship problems. Finally, in Science, we've been busy learning about dissolving. We conducted an investigation to see what happened when we put candyfloss in water then oil. The children were rather sad when they discovered that the candyfloss immediately dissolved away! Please enjoy the pictures below and have a great week. Miss Radbourne.

We've had a great week getting to know each other. The children have made a fantastic start to Year 6, thinking about the maturity and responsibilities that go with this year. I've been able to see how creative the class is through some fantastic art work and self portraits which are now on display in the classroom. I've also been impressed with some fantastic discussion during our Book Club sessions and English lessons. This week, we have completed our first practise SATs papers, so that the children can familiarise themselves early with the format and expectations of these statutory assessments. They have been amazing and taken it all in their stride, and I feel very proud of them already! We also enjoyed a singing workshop with some musicians from the Whiddon Down Autumn Festival on Wednesday and the class sang fantastically. Next week, we will be back to a normal timetable and diving into our new topics: The Industrial Revolution in history; Physical & Chemical reactions in Science and lots more. Please do come along to my Parents Information Evening on Tuesday at 3.30pm - I really look forward to meeting you all. Have a lovely day. Miss Radbourne |
