Cuckoos - Y1
23rd February 2026- Design and Technology
This term in Design and Technology, we are learning about mechanisms and we will eventually be making a moving story. Today we began the unit by learning what a mechanism is, looking at some different types of mechanisms, such as sliders and levers and then we had a go at making a slider of Jack and the Beanstalk. The children worked really hard to cut out the beams for their slider and everyone was successful in having a sliding character that climbed up and down the beanstalk! Well done Cuckoo's.

12th February 2026- Nugget Treat
Year 1 have been so fantastic this term! By super listening, following instructions and lots of had work, they have filled up their nugget chart with a few days to spare. They all loved bringing in a toy from home and I saw some wonderful play happening in the classroom- turn-taking, imagination and co-operation could be seen by everyone. Well done Cuckoo's- have a well deserved half term break!

9th February 2026- Computing
We have had an awesome time this week, putting all of our knowledge about programming and algorithms to use by using a virtual bee-bot. The children were challenged to programme the robot down the (virtual) country road and had a fantastic time using the laptops!

6th February 2026- Aquarium Trip
Cuckoos class had a wonderful trip to the National Marine Aquarium last week. The children were all so polite and attentive to our tour guide. We absolutely loved seeing the different kinds of sharks and jellyfish and the children learnt lots of fantastic facts about Octopuses, ready for writing our fact file this week. During the afternoon we had a workshop on habitats and starting making a 'Habitat Hat', which we will finish in class this week.

29th January 2026- A visit from a Scientist....
Cuckoo's had a show from our very own scientist today! Charlie showed us how static electricity can make ghosts and also made an electrical circuit with an apple- it was absolutely fantastic! Thank you to Charlie for sharing your science skills with us- the children absolutely loved it! If your child has done any science experiments at home that they would like to share, please do let me know.

Tricky Word Disco
This week we had a tricky word disco- the children got to have a dance and when the music stopped they had to write down a tricky word. Great practice and good to get those legs moving in the afternoon!

22nd January 2026 - English
We have just finished writing our first short narrative in English. Filth and Vacuum, two awful baddies, have landed in the school and the children finished their own story where a superhero comes and saves the day. They worked hard to ensure they didn't forget their capital letters, finger spaces and full stops, as well as including some amazing descriptive language and pictures,.

History
This week in History we learnt about transport in space, how Laika was the first dog to travel into Space and the first mission to the moon was called Apollo 11. The class was absolutely fascinated by this topic, asking lots of relevant questions and engaging in the content fantastically!
