The Sports Premium is a government grant that provides funding to primary schools in England to improve the quality of physical education (PE) and sport. The funding is intended to help schools encourage healthy, active lifestyles for their pupils. 

 
The Sports Premium is allocated directly to schools as a lump sum plus a per-pupil top-up. The amount a school receives is based on the number of primary-aged pupils in the school. For the 2025–2026 academic year, each school will receive £16,000 plus £10 per primary-aged pupil. 

 
Schools can use the funding in a variety of ways, including:

• Improving the quality of PE and sport provision 
  
  
• Providing additional activities for pupils who may not be able to access traditional PE lessons 
  
  
• Establishing links with other local schools 
  
  
• Providing top-up swimming and water safety sessions 

The government has announced that the Sports Premium will continue for the 2025-2026 academic year, which will be the final year of this grant.
