INTENT
At South Tawton Primary, we aim to provide a Physical Education curriculum that delivers consistently high quality, inclusive lessons that inspire all pupils to enjoy, succeed and reflect on sport and physical activity. Our curriculum focuses on the development of the fundamental movement skills (agility, balance and coordination) which can then be applied to all sporting skills. We strongly believe in providing opportunities, both inside and outside the classroom, for pupils to become physically confident in a way that supports their health and fitness. We want to provide children with opportunities to participate in a variety of sports and other activities that allow children to challenge themselves, build character and help to embed values such as fairness, respect and teamwork.
AIMS
The national curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils:
In PE, children will study four areas of sport. These are: Gymnastics, Athletics, Games and Dance. Within PE lessons, children will adopt many different roles such as a performer, coach, umpire and leader and also explore many different outdoor activities.

AIMS
The national curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils:
- develop competence in a broad range of physical activities
- have a positive attitude to being physically active for sustained periods of time
- engage in a variety of competitive sports and activities
- lead healthy, active lives

Implementation
At South Tawton Primary School, we follow the RealPE framework that has interlinking ‘learning cogs’ as its core. These help develop the child as a whole and not just in sporting skills. There are six cogs in total: personal, social, cognitive, health and fitness, physical and creative. Each RealPE unit focuses on a different learning cog; units change every half term.
Each class has two PE lessons a week; one is a Real PE lesson, which allows the children to develop in various areas of sport including Gymnastics, Athletics, Games and Dance. A qualified Saints FC coach (who the class teacher works alongside) provides a high quality, bespoke second lesson.
Both lessons provide the children with opportunities to adopt many different roles such as a performer, coach, umpire and leader.
Numerous after school clubs provide further sporting opportunities for KS2 children throughout the year; working with OCRA, these lead onto opportunities to perform competitively for those who want to. There are also non-competitive sports events to introduce children to a wider variety of activities.
During the year, Year 5/6 children are trained to become Sports Leaders; those children are responsible for encouraging active play amongst the younger children in a supportive and fun way.
Annually, our whole-school sports day is held, where children are organised into their coloured teams. The day consists of both competitive and non-competitive elements, but a theme of teamwork runs throughout the day with children, from both KS1 and KS2, working together to complete sporting challenges.
Impact
Our PE curriculum motivates and challenges every child. It provides the children with opportunities to develop at their own pace and to set personal bests in a wide variety of sporting opportunities. As a school, we develop an understanding and enjoyment of sport, exercise and fitness and the crucial importance it has in everyone’s lives. Children leave South Tawton with a wide breadth of sporting experience and positive attitudes towards physical exercise.
