Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education

At South Tawton Primary School:
- PHSE teaching occurs through carefully planned opportunities and incidental opportunities that arise.
- Our planning provides a ‘spiral programme’ which introduces new and more challenging learning, while building on what has gone before, which reflects and meets the personal developmental needs of the children and young people.
- We take a positive approach which focuses on what children can do to keep themselves and others healthy and safe and to lead happy and fulfilling lives.
- We offer a wide variety of teaching and learning styles within PSHE education, with an emphasis on interactive learning and the teacher as facilitator.
- We provide information which is realistic and relevant and which reinforces positive social norms.
- We encourage young people to reflect on their learning and the progress they have made, and to transfer what they have learned to say and to do from one school subject to another, and from school to their lives in the wider community.
- PSHE education is embedded within other efforts to ensure children and young people have positive relationships with adults, feel valued and those who are most vulnerable are identified and supported.
- We provide opportunities for children and young people to make real decisions about their lives, to take part in activities which simulate adult choices and where they can demonstrate their ability to take responsibility for their decisions.
- We provide a safe and supportive learning environment where children can develop the confidence to ask questions, challenge the information they are offered, draw on their own experience, express their views and opinions and put what they have learned into practice in their own lives.
Intent
At South Tawton Primary School we believe personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is a vital part of our children’s education. Through the promotion of good physical and mental health, our staff work collaboratively and as role models to help our children develop into confident, happy, successful and resilient young people. Throughout we aim to equip our children with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills to make safe and informed decisions. We want children at South Tawton to acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of the world around them in order to help them develop as a young citizen. In an ever changing world, it is important that the children are aware, to an appropriate level, of different elements that will affect their world and the people in it.
PSHE plays an important role in promoting Safeguarding, Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) Education, incorporating British Values, which is implicit in the school ethos and is planned into all aspects of the curriculum.
Developing an understanding of themselves, empathy and the ability to work with others will help our children form and maintain good relationships and explore the complex and sometimes conflicting values and attitudes they encounter in a tolerant and accepting manner.

Implementation
Our PSHE objectives are taught throughout the school using the Coram Life Education SCARF Programme of Study. It also features across the curriculum especially in our RE, Science and PE curriculum. At South Tawton, we teach our PSHE (SCARF) sessions in discreet lessons led by the class teachers, but also in assemblies. We provide our children with opportunities to learn about rights and responsibilities and promote random acts of kindness, which we include in our celebration assemblies and during themed weeks such as ‘Anti Bully week’ and ‘Children’s Mental Health Awareness week.’ Many opportunities arise during the school week for our children to work effectively in groups, take on roles of responsibility and to come together as a whole school community to celebrate and reflect on our journey together. The SCARF programme is split into three core themes of:
After consultation with parents and governors, we have implemented a revised SRE policy and teaching sequence in line with the needs of our pupils.
Impact
Our PSHE curriculum ensures that all our children become engaged, active and responsible citizens who recognise and value their contribution to wider, modern society. They gain a perspective of themselves as both local and global citizens. Our school values and PSHE programme are vital in promoting health, happiness and well-being so that all our children can excel in all aspects of school life and indeed life in general. Through our PSHE curriculum we believe we are preparing our children for the next stage in their education as well as preparing them for adult life.
