The new term is well on its way with the children hitting the ground running. With SATS around the corner it is safe to say the children are working hard to achieve the best they can. As is evident in their positive and engaging attitude in lessons.
We have also started to learn about both world wars, something Year 6 seem to be thoroughly enjoying and finding extremely interesting. So far, we have looked at what it must have been like to be an evacuee in Devon during world war 2 and studied the poor conditions of trench warfare on the western front in world war 1. The use of Michael Morpurgo's books really helps bring the past alive and captures an idea of what life would have been like back then. As we carry on learning about World War 2, I hope to bring in a primary source from my own family, which I know the children will enjoy looking at. If you have anything from your own family or friends, we in Year 6 (and especially Mr Calderwood) would love to see and hear about it! It might not seem like it with all the rain we have been having, however spring is on its way and Easter is nearly upon us. Year 6 have finished their final SATS practice tests and there has been improvement all round.
As we roll into the 3rd week of term already it is safe to say that Y6 have been busy revising for our SATS. I wish them all the best for next week! We have also been investigating impressionism, in particular work by Claude Monet and his famous ‘Japanese bridge’ artwork using acrylic paints. His artwork is inspirational and the techniques we are learning could be used to paint beautiful impressions of Dartmoor. Give it a go!! As we brace ourselves for the spring half term, I have to say Year 6 have been a pleasure to teach these past 5 weeks. I am especially impressed by their dedication towards our book club reading sessions and their team work during their outdoor education lessons.
