In PE, Year 5 are learning to become Real Leaders. We've been thinking about the qualities that make a good leader.
In our SCARF lessons, some pupils acted out how they'd respond to 'risky dares' and we discussed how we could help others who feel pressured by friends to do something risky. It's been lovely to see pupils back in class this week, they have all come back with such a positive and calm attitude.
We have started a new History topic of the Benin Kingdom and in Science we will be studying the changes that humans go through from an embryo to old age. In art, we are currently researching Pablo Picasso's cubist art and later in the term we will use this information to see how he was influenced by African art. Merry Christmas and Happy New YearAll the staff in Year 5 would like to wish the pupils and their families a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy 2023. We've really enjoyed this term and we're looking forward to seeing you all in January. Term starts back on Wednesday 5th January.
Best Wishes Mrs Leslie, Mrs Bonnett and Miss Watts. Last week in Year 5, the children all designed a gingerbread figure to decorate the School hall (along with the other classes), for Christmas. As Miss Watts and I stuck them on the window, we saw all the cleverly thought out designs the children had made. They all look very Christmassy- well done Year 5!
On Wednesday afternoon, we had some visitors in school from Proper Job, Chagford. The ladies taught us about what it means to be more sustainable, through reusing, reducing and recycling our belongings, which we no longer want. All the children made a Christmas wreath using recycled fabrics, supplied by Proper Job, and each child attached their pledge for how they would make their own Christmas more sustainable this year. The wreaths all looked stunning. Mrs Bonnett, Mrs Leslie & Miss Watts Learning about Levers After experimenting how to balance a ruler with: two different sized coins, a pencil and a ruler, the class conducted an experiment to explain how we can lift a Kg weight using a lever. In English we are studying Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book. On Thursday afternoon, we read with our Year R Reading Buddies and helped them practise their letter sounds.
With balancing tables, benches and mats out, the class performed sequences in PE involving balances, twists and jumps, displaying great control and some superb rolls to finish. Mrs Bonnett, Mrs Leslie and Miss Watts In Science, Year 5 are learning about Forces. This week we studied the effects of Gravity and Air Resistance on objects. We used this learning to try and create parachutes that would safely land an egg.
To start our English unit of work this term, Year 5 enjoyed a bracing walk to the top of Cosdon Beacon on Monday. Our Dartmoor Ranger, Ian Brooker, provided us with a fascinating guide, explaining some of the history and geology of our local part of the moors. What an amazing sense of achievement we all felt when we reached the top! Well done everyone. In Geography this term, we are studying Informal Settlements and we started the lesson with discussing what makes a good shelter. In Art, we drew pictures in the style of a post-impressionist artist.

Some quotes from the children about the things we have been doing inside and outside the classroom, during the first half of the term: "This half term has been fun, but the thing I most enjoyed was Forest School. We made ink and quills and wrote in medieval letters with them. We also had playtime there. Loads of people wanted to go to the mud kitchen." "This half term I have really enjoyed the football and PE. PE was fun because we got to go outside and do activities. The football tournaments were super fun and enjoyable." " This half term I have enjoyed the harvest festival. I liked this because I like working with little children. My partner was in Year R and he enjoyed talking on the way up to the church." We all hope that you're enjoying your half term break and look forward to seeing you for our walk on Monday. Mrs Bonnett, Mrs Leslie and Miss Watts.
