The Ugly Duckling

We have read The Ugly Duckling as part of our work on Celebrating Differences. 
We have learnt that name calling can be hurtful behaviour and the memory of the hurtful feeling can stay for a very long time. Hans Christian Anderson has written a powerful story that can teach us a lesson. Through drama we explored ideas that could be learnt from the story. The children discussed:

• Why did the other birds call him names? 
• What names might they have used?
• How might calling someone names make them feel?
• What did he do because he felt this way?
• Do you think the duckling would forget the names the other birds called him?
