The Year 4 class have had a brilliant first week back after the Easter holidays. The majority of our class have started our new English topic 'How to Train your Dragon' and they have already produced some fantastic descriptions of their own dragons using effective adjectives. We were very fortunate to have OCRA visit on Thursday afternoon and the children participated in a futsal competition. The sun was shining and the children had a fantastic time! They have also been busy producing some lovely artwork, drawing dragons and making Viking boats and artefacts to go on our working wall. I hope you all have a very restful weekend. The Year 4's have worked incredibly hard on their play this week and we can't wait for you all to see it on Monday and Tuesday! We performed the dress rehearsal to the whole school today and it was fantastic. The children did amazingly and I was incredibly proud of them all! Some of the Year 4 class who attend after school tag rugby also participated in a tournament this afternoon with some of the Year 5 and 6's. It was wet and windy but the children were fantastic and thoroughly enjoyed it!
On Tuesday, we visited Escot to take part in their History program (Anglo-Saxon’s experience). The weather was fantastic and the members of staff had a full list of activities for us to participate in.
We started by completing a maze before heading to the Anglo - Saxon village and engaging in the daily routines and jobs that the Anglo - Saxons would have done. These included: baking bread, mental work (making a roach), woodwork and writing by carving into wood. After lunch, we explored the park and learnt about the animals that were living in England at that time. As the children were so brilliantly behaved, we spent the last 20 minutes of the day playing and having fun in the park. The members of staff at Escot were amazed at the children’s behaviour and mentioned that they were a credit to the school. They also kindly gifted us the materials and artefacts that we had made which are now on display in the classroom. We'd like to say a huge thank you to the PTA for contributing towards the cost of our trip. It's very much appreciated and a good day was had by all! The Year 4 class have made a fantastic start to the new term and have had a very exciting week. This started with auditioning for and then finding out our parts for our school play, Oliver Twist. We've already began rehearsing and can't wait for you all to see it at the end of the term!
As well as that, we have been fortunate enough spend a lesson with an experienced Cricket player, from Devon Cricket which the children thoroughly enjoyed. During our PE lessons, we have began learning how to play and develop our skills in handball. To end the week on a high, we did a (very messy) class experiment in Science to help the children visualise and gain a better understanding of how the digestive system works. Where we mixed together different foods (to show how our teeth tear our food into chunks) before placing it into a pairs of tights (acting as the oesophagus and intestines). As the food travelled down, we began to squeeze the tights to show how the nutrients are released into our bodies before we deposit the remaining solids. We have been celebrating 'Love yourself' week across the school this week. This involved talking about and writing things that they love about themselves which was lovely to see. It was also non-school uniform day on Friday, and the children brought in their own toys or teddies into school with them.
The Year 4 class have had a very exciting and creative week which has included creating personalised optical illusion pictures in art, learning about and drawing different Anglo-Saxon Gods and Goddesses and experimenting to create fascinating patterns on FMS Logo.
It sounds like the Year 4 class had a fantastic time over the Christmas holidays and they have settled back into school very well. This week we began learning about Sounds for our new Science topic, the Anglo-Saxons during History lessons whilst continuing our work on multiplication in Maths. The children have particularly enjoyed our latest book for English 'The day the crayons quit', which they have found very amusing!
We have studied the Willow Pattern in our Art lessons. The children have learnt that the story is set in China and tells the tale of two lovers escaping together. The children were surprised to discover that the pattern is actually British and was designed by a man called Thomas Minton at the end of the 18th century. The children have created their own copies of the Willow Pattern plate design using blue ink. They then choose a favourite or familiar story and drew the key elements and main characters to create their own story plates. We think the results are fantastic!
Can you work out which stories the children have chosen to draw on their plates |
